Over the past few days, there has been a lot of speculation surrounding the prices of the iPhone 5 here in India. The reason for it was that Apple had reduced the prices of the iPhone 4S twice in the span of 10 days. Redington, one of the distributors of the iPhone 5 in India has revealed the prices of the handset with the base model, the 16GB handset, being launched for Rs 45,500.

The 32GB version of the iPhone 5 will be available for Rs 52,500 and the 64GB model for Rs 59,500. These prices are more or less on par with the previous generation iPhone 4S, when it was first launched in India.

Ingram Micro has recently announced that it will offer the Apple iPhone 5 at leading trade stores and retail outlets across India beginning on Friday, November 2. It was recently reported that in order to expand its user base in India, Apple will start selling the iPhone 5 through specialised distribution companies. Apple has tied up with Ingram Micro Inc, which is a large US-based distributor of technologies, as well as Redington India Ltd, a local distributor with 12,000 smaller partners across the country.

According to a recent report, “Apple has used both these distributors in the past for products like the iPad, but did not do so for the iPhone as it was concerned that paying third-party distributors would eat into its profit margins on a key product. Apple’s Chief Executive Tim Cook said earlier this year that the company saw higher potential in countries other than India, largely because of the high cost of distributing products here. “We have a business there, that business is growing, but the sort of the multilayer distribution there really adds to the cost of getting products to market,” Mr. Cook told analysts in July.”

Safari has also received a major update – the ability to go full screen on the device by touching the arrows on the corners. Another major feature of the new Safari app is the ability to sync tabs between the desktop and iOS versions of Safari. This new feature is called iCloud Tabs. The new Mail app has also received some updates, including the ability to mark people as VIPs and the ability to flag certain mails for follow-ups.

Assassin's Creed III Review

With the development cost of your average big-budget AAA game running into some $100-odd million, it takes great courage to pump that kind of money into a new intellectual property (IP), as opposed to a popular franchise with a well-established fan base. Even when you do get new IPs, it's generally the same clichéd cover shooter fare; any modicum of innovation existing therein is sterilised after several passes through the focus group nonsense.

Fortunately, Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed wasn't like any other AAA title. It broke the mould when it launched in 2007. The game employed Thief's brand of stealth pivoting around parkour-based gameplay—all packaged in a compelling mix of history and science fiction. The rest is history, and it's little wonder why the franchise went on to become Ubisoft's most profitable property. Needless to say, Assassin's Creed III (AC3) sure has large shoes to fill. However, with obscenely large budgets and a large pool of development talent, it's a no brainer that the game is poised for greatness.

After visiting Jerusalem and Europe for the original and the sequel, the third installment brings the eternal clash between the Assassins and Templars to Colonial America. Think of this as a less cheesy version of Mel Gibson's The Patriot, albeit with a half-English, half-Native American protagonist with a decidedly unpronounceable name that's conveniently anglicised as Connor Kenway. Like all Assassin Creed games, the narrative pivots around real historical events. This time, it's an engaging ride spanning 30 years of Connor's life as he fends off invading British forces that are hell bent on assimilating his village. If you haven't clued in to it yet, all this involves the dastardly Templars who have a special interest in sacred grounds hidden within Connor's village.


Unlike the past games, the real life Assassin counterpart and main protagonist Desmond Miles gets a lot more screen time as the game segues between the Animus and present world. The 2012 apocalypse plot element introduced in the first game becomes the focus of Desmond's missions, which take on a stealthy role in a modern setting conducive to free running. The presentation, as expected, is rather slick, with excellent production values and impressive voice acting that does justice to various settler accents while also preserving the period feel. The entire single player campaign spans well over 30 hours and sees Connor transcend from a naive, angsty kid to a skilled assassin. Fortunately, AC3 consciously avoids the set piece porn evident in every AAA game these days. It instead opts for a subtle, nuanced narrative replete with great character development—all set against a rich, engaging plot based on a central theme of revenge

The large-team, big-budget pedigree of this game is evident in all the right places. This level of texture and mesh detail in a vast open world setting belies the hardware limitations of the console, and seems more at home in the PC version. Granted there is a bit of texture pop-in visible, but the overall texture size and model detail is unprecedented for a PS3 game. The game world is incredibly vast and spans the cities of Boston and New York and three smaller settlements, in addition to frontier landscape replete with forest, cliff, grassland and snowy areas. Each area comes with an intrusive loading screen, but the sheer magnificence of eye candy and attention to detail evident in each more than makes up for it.


The graphics engine is capable of excellent particle effects as well as volumetric fog and lighting. All this brings weather effects alive with consummate detail. Be it the sun-kissed splendour of the grassland, low-visibility during rains, or the tracks you leave behind in the snow—the redesigned Anvil engine creates a living, breathing microcosm that surprisingly runs just shy of 60 fps on the PS3. Water is rendered with a great degree of detail in the naval missions, while the storm and battle destruction effects are faithfully recreated. The character animations are fluid and loop seamlessly between complex combat moves and acrobatic parkour flourishes. This is easily one of the best looking PS3 games I have witnessed in the recent past.

HTC Windows Phone 8X, 8S announced for India, along with pricing details

HTC has announced that its first two WP8 handsets, the Windows Phone 8X and 8S, will be released in India this month. The Taiwanese mobile giant also released pricing information for the two devices – the top-end HTC Windows Phone 8X gets an MOP of Rs. 35,023, the mid-range HTC Windows Phone 8S gets an MOP of Rs. 19,260.
The company also announced two other smartphones for the Indian market, the HTC Desire SV, and HTC One X+ (hit up the links for detailed coverage), pricing them at Rs. 22,590 and Rs. 40,190 respectively.

HTC Windows Phone 8X

Running on a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 chipset, the HTC Windows Phone 8X features a dual-core 1.5GHz processor and Adreno 225 GPU, coupled with 1GB of RAM. It bears a 4.3-inch (1,280x720 pixel - 342ppi) Super LCD2 display, complete with Gorilla Glass 2 protection, and anti-glare lamination. Lightweight at 130 grams (compared to the Nokia Lumia 920's staggering 185 grams), the 8X is 10.1mm-thick, and uses a polycarbonate unibody design. The HTC Windows Phone 8X is available in four colours - California Blue, Graphite Black, Flame Red and Limelight Yellow.

The HTC Windows Phone 8X comes with 16GB of built-in storage, with no microSD slot. It features an 8MP autofocus camera with a BSI sensor, LED flash, and an f/2.0 lens, with a 28mm FOV. The 8X also boasts of a dedicated image processor – the HTC ImageChip, which will also deliver 1080p HD video recording at 30fps, along with stereo sound. The device also comes with Beats Audio sound – there will no bundled headphones though.
As for connectivity options, the HTC Windows Phone 8X offers 3G (HSUPA/HSDPA), Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n with dual-band functionality, Bluetooth v2.1 with A2DP and EDR, NFC, microUSB v2.0, GPS with A-GPS support, 3.5mm audio jack, and no FM radio. The 8X is powered by a 1,800 mAh battery, however, HTC has not revealed expected battery life for the device.

HTC Windows Phone 8S

The HTC Windows Phone 8S also runs on Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 chipset, with a dual-core 1GHz processor and Adreno 225 GPU, coupled with 512MB of RAM. The 8S features a 4-inch S-LCD display with an 800x480 pixel resolution (233ppi), and a Gorilla Glass screen. Weighing in at 113 grams, the 8S is 10.3mm thick, and features 4GB of built-in storage, with microSD expandability up to 32GB (unlike the 8S).

It features a 5MP autofocus camera with LED flash, and 720p HD video recording at 30fps. The 8S also comes with Beats Audio sound, with no bundled headphones once again. In terms of connectivity, the HTC Windows Phone 8S offers 3G (HSUPA/HSDPA), Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth v2.1 with A2DP and EDR, microUSB v2.0, GPS with A-GPS support, and a 3.5mm audio jack. The HTC Windows Phone 8S is powered by a 1,700 mAh battery.

Update: A new trailer for Grand Theft Auto V is in the works, but has been delayed due to Hurrican Sandy, A post on Rockstar's official website said:

"We are working on a second trailer - unfortunately Hurricane Sandy has derailed our plans somewhat but we will have something to show soon. It's hard to be precise as we have no power whatsoever in our New York office. We hope everyone else in affected areas is doing okay."

With Grand Theft Auto 5 now confirmed thanks to the GTA V trailer which was released a few months ago we look at all the news, trailers and rumours surrounding the upcoming Rockstar title.

Update: According to fresh rumours, we could be seeing a GTA 5 release date announcement at the Gamescom trade fair, which is held annually in Cologne, Germany.

The rumour mill went wild after a Gamescom 2012 promotional video, which was released online earlier this month, showed a brief clip of the game.

The game's publisher, Take-Two, is also included on the list of exhibitors, so the chances of a big announcement being made is extremely likely, although never gaurenteed.

Previously, developer Rockstar offered a tantalising insight into Grand Theft Auto 5 with a spokesperson for the company telling eager gamers more is to come "in a few months time."

That was a few months ago.

"Right now, we are very hard at work on the game and are excited as well to show and tell you more as development progresses," an unnamed representative for the company said.

"Expect that we'll be talking much more about GTAV starting at some point in a few months' time."

What we do know for certain is that GTA 5 will be arriving on the PS3 after Sony’s PlayStation 3 site put up an official GTA V web page.

Elsewhere the map for GTA V has been 'leaked' via a person claiming to be an employee of Rockstar who was leaving in two weeks, the map shows Los Santos along with desirable Vinewood area known for being a fictional interpretation of Hollywood.

As yet there has been no official confirmation on a Grand Theft Auto 5 release date however analysts believe that Rockstar is following a 6 month schedule which will see an E3 2012 launch.

IndustryGamers spoke to financial analysts who believe this schedule will result in a release before the end of 2012.

"We believe Rockstar Games is modeling a 4 to 6 month marketing window for their upcoming GTA V release, suggesting a Summer '12 launch period,"

If Zavvi is to be believed then the GTA 5 release date will be much later with the site stating an exact release date of 23 November which would put it in line to be Christmas no.1.

With the gaming world looking toward Rockstar for a confirmed GTA V UK release date, a developer on the title has suggested the game's release has been pushed back from a previously tipped October arrival to a new December launch.

Being the only official source of information the Grand Theft Auto 5 trailer was useful in establishing a number of facts including the location and the characters that would be featuring in the game.

Based on Los Angeles the main location of the game will be centred around the fictional city of Los Santos, first seen in Grand Theft Auto 4.

Los Santos will be situated within San Andreas and if the trailer is anything to go by you’ll be able to explore much of the surrounding countryside as well.

It’s believed that the game will feature many of the same driveable vehicles as has been prominent in all Grand Theft Auto games, again if the trailer is to be an indicator it would appear as though aircraft will also be featuring.

Probably the biggest GTA 5 rumour at the moment is that the game’s lead character will be played by actor Ned Luke after the game appeared on his IMDB profile (it has since been removed).

It’s believed that he will be playing the lead character of the game whose name is rumoured to be Albert De Silva.

There had been reports that the character was Ray Liotta reprising his role as an older Tommy Vercetti, however fansites such as gtav.net have agreed in their prediction of Luke as the actor involved.

CVG believes that we’ll also see the return of CJ, the main protagonist from GTA: San Andreas.

Of course while there is a likeness between CJ and the character in the trailer it’s far from solid proof so we’ll have to wait for E3 until we know for sure.

According to several fan sites the game will come with a multiplayer mode, of course what that will be specifically is unclear.

Some have suggested that the game will take on board the lessons learned through Red Dead Redemption so will include a number of mini-games and with the trailer showing jet ski's and golfing you could find yourself racing around the bay in online races.
